Alright so you are done with thinking and deciding that you want a blog. Well, congratulations! But the next step is even harder, CHOOSING A BLOG NAME!
Trust me, it took me more than a week to choose a name for my blog. I researched a lot, talked to everyone I know and took opinions, did everything I could to be sure that the name I am gonna choose is actually the right choice. But I am telling you that if you ask bloggers out there, many of them would say that they would love to change their blog names if given a chance.
Do you wana be one of those bloggers who want to change their blog name after sometime they launch their blog? I am sure you would say NO!
Then let me tell you that choosing a blog name in a hurry, without doing research is a bad idea. Yes there are examples when bloggers picked a name and that was a big hit but that happens rarely. The Internet is so saturated now that anything that brings a spark is like a miracle. I don’t want you to regret the blog name you choose too quick so here is a detailed guide that includes 10 tips about choosing a perfect blog name.
If you ask me, I have done a few mistakes too so I just want to tell you 10 ways to avoid those mistakes now. I am sure you are going to love it ?
1. WHAT IS YOUR NICHE AND WHAT DO YOU WANT TO WRITE ABOUT?
I personally believe that your blog name should reflect your niche. If you are a mom blogger, you cannot choose a name like “my mascara” because that obviously doesn’t reflect. Think about the topics that you like and you want to write about them. Note them down somewhere and make a list. Are you going to write about cooking? About shopping? About motherhood? About fashion?
But if you think you want to write about everything, then choose something that covers all the topics.
2. GET ADVICE FROM FRIENDS OR ONLINE!
If you have thought about the name and you cannot decide which one to pick, one way is to ask around. Ask your friends, your family, anybody who has a blog so that you get more ideas. The best thing about asking friends is that they know you more than anybody so they can help you better. They can help you choose a blog name that actually reflects your personality and your writing.
If you don’t want to ask your friends, ask online. There are so many online forums where people talk and discuss about blogging and related stuff. You can ask them and I am sure you would get some really good ideas this way ? try this and let me know if that worked for you or not.
3. DON’T COPY ANYBODY!
Sometimes I think, everything that is available in this online world is copied. Ideas, blogs, writings, posts, people, everything seems so similar. But still, that doesn’t mean you just get up and copy somebody. That’s not the right way! In this saturated world, the challenge is to keep your uniqueness alive. Get a name that is new, impressive, appealing, new and interesting. Be yourself!
4. RESEARCH, RESEARCH AND RESEARCH!
Google is your friend, trust me. I have asked more questions and learned more from Google than from anybody. Not even from books. So believe me if I am telling you that you can even google the blog names and choose one. There are so many tools, so many apps and even websites where you can choose a blog name and they tell you even if it is taken or not. To save your time ? when I was choosing my blog name, I used to google every time and still it took me a week to pick one. 5. ARE YOU INSPIRED BY SOMEBODY?
We all get inspired by any celeb or any person in our lives. If you want to blog because some other blogger inspired you, you can think about a name they chose. I am not telling you to copy somebody, instead, I am telling you that you can get inspired by somebody. There are so many blogs and websites that have a name part inspired by a celebrity or a person. If you think your mother inspires you, you can use her name. If you feel like any celebrity inspires you, modify their name. Do whatever you want to do. Just don’t copy.
6. ADD LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR!
Laughter is contagious! Trust me. You can earn additional benefits of being a funny blogger. People love to watch funny videos, read funny content. Life is already hard so adding a little bit of humor may bring the spark that you actually want. I love the name “scary mommy” and this blog is one of the best blogs out there. It’s worth a try if you think like that ? but choose if you think you can carry it forward very well. Don’t blame me if that won’t work. Lol.
7. TRY USING YOUR OWN NAME.
If after searching and brain storming, you cannot choose a name, think about choosing your own names. I know so many bloggers who actually created their blogs using their full names or part of their names and they are running their blogs successfully. Especially if you are going to create a lifestyle blog that is a personal one, choosing it after your name is not a bad idea. Try it!
8. PLEASE DON’T USE SPECIAL CHARACTERS OR NUMBERS
If you ask me as an online reader, I won’t open a blog that is difficult to spell. I don’t know why people keep their blog names so difficult. Nobody likes the hassle of writing a blog name with difficult character and the numbers. Please keep it simple, easy to pronounce, easy to spell and write. You will thank me later for this advice. Believe me!
9. TAKE YOUR TIME.
Choosing a blog name is like choosing something that will be with you forever. Like your own name. People will get to know you by your blog name. Your blog name will be your identity. It’s gonna be with you for a lifetime. Don’t make a mistake to choose a wrong name and regret later. DON’T RUSH! Consider all options, all names, all choices before you pick ONE NAME. Changing a blog name later is a serious loss. You lose your organic traffic, your followers and little bit of popularity too. So be more than 100% sure before you choose a blog name.
10. CHECK IF YOUR BLOG NAME IS AVAILABLE.
Now when you have noted down all the names that you like, the next step is to choose a domain. Choose whether you want a dot com, or blogspot dot com or dot net. I would recommend even if you want to start a free blog, consider buying a domain. There are many cheap domain options available and they will charge you few dollars and you can get a domain that would be personally yours. But the decision is up to you.
BONUS TIP:
Another suggestion is while choosing the blog name that perfectly fits your blog, keep checking the domain’s availability. There is nothing worse than picking a blog name and not finding the domain later. That is the reason I said earlier, research before you pick a name.
Try checking the domain availability on Namecheap. You will get alternatives and related domain names that are available if the one you are looking for is not available.

So while choosing a blog name, I would again say, choose one that you really love. You should be proud of your blog name. That name is gonna stay with you for years, and even forever.
